Isma3oo, no. 9—Kalimat x Radio Zinhum

In this guest edition of the Kalimat Podcast, I’ve pulled up a some favourites from the past few years. Starting with a cover of the dreamy intro to Albi w Moftaho by Samir Habib’s 70s band El Jets followed some unsolicited flattery from a military figure sung to a true rendition of Baligh Hamdi’s Qissat Hob. A short verse by Khaled al-Araby and the timeless Nisyan by Ahmad Fakroun lead into an interview with a couple of the guys from EcransMed on their experience screening films in public, tackling egos and the influence of funding on cultural presentations. The episode wraps up with an impressive unreleased remix of Fairouz's lullaby Rima Tinam by Solpara followed by a mashup of Samir Sabry and himself. If you enjoyed this podcast and have some interesting soundbites to share, drop us a line.

Isma3oo, no. 8 by Karim Sultan

Isma3oo No. 8 features all original production by contributing editor and producer Karim Sultan. Covering a variety of styles and sounds, the overall approach of the mix draws on reinterpretations of contemporary and ‘classic’ Arabic music, but without nostalgia or romanticisim. Instead, familiar rhythms and elements of melody are drawn through the computer in a series of sketches, outlines, and pieces.

Isma3oo, no. 7 by Karim Sultan

In this edition, I wanted to feature a one-on-one conversation with the artists who I meet. Since being based in Doha, an interesting city with an equally interesting host of characters that inhabit it, I will be a featuring regular talks with the people I encounter. In this case, I speak to Khalifa al Obeidly, a photo artist and cultural professional in the world of development, a common fixture in Doha. He discusses the importance of having a clear and serious subject for photography and how to remain focused. This edition also features original music, and another remix in the vein of Remixaat.
